MANDARIN ORIENTAL BANGKOK

 

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok has been standing on the banks of the Chao Phraya for over 140 years, receiving scores of dignitaries and fans into its fabled suites and historic parlours. There have been recent refurbishments, but the visage remains resolutely unchanging and ever so one's cherished home away from home.

There are so many stupendous options for culinary indulgences here - tea at the elegant Authors' Lounge or tipples at the colonial Bamboo Bar for starters - but if there is just one choice it will have to be a sitting at Le Normandie, quite possibly the best fine dining institution in Bangkok today. Over at The Oriental Spa, also an entrenched favourite for wellness enthusiasts, one can opt for the very popular Oriental Signature massage or have a grand time treating one's nails to the podiatric therapies of Bastien Gonzalez.

A noted champion of the home away from home cliche, MO Bangkok delivers grand service with such thoughtful, familial touches that it sometimes makes one wish this is indeed home.

The garden wing has been splendidly restored recently with an unchanging countenance. What remains to be seen now is how the stately lobby and the slightly dated rooms in the river wing will be transformed when their turn comes.
