An unusually relaxed air permeates U Sathorn Bangkok, a three-storey hotel with an open-air lobby furtively tucked away meters from the city's busiest arteries.

Within U Sathorn Bangkok is the culinary bastion of an illustrious French chef whose mastery over classical fares is well translated here in the sprightly J'AIME by Jean-Michel Lorain, a one star restaurant that is elegantly attuned to the rigours of fine French dining.

Staff are very courteous and considerate towards guests' expectations. We were very cordially invited to the lounge for a proper cocktail while waiting for the room to be ready at check-in.

One can describe the property as rather resort-ish but what a pity it wasn't a sentiment that was thoroughly imbued into its design blueprint. As a city hotel one might find it charmingly tranquil but lacks the essential hardware to elevate it into an urban hideaway despite some very real prospects.
