A spate of new openings in Kyoto is giving the imperial city a luxury buzz that's somewhat overdue. The latest entrant is the 4 Seasons Kyoto, a 127 room property set over an 800 year old garden in the Higashiyama district.
The first thing that stands out when one enters the hotel is the expanse of space its high ceilings and long corridors convey to the eyes. Three arresting floral sculptures lining the side of the entrance set the tone for the art-scaping here; keep your eyes peeled on the public areas and you will find a liberal dose of art dotting the space from striking Kondo pieces at the lobby to Washi panels by Horiki Eriko at the banqueting wing. Attentive eyes will be drawn to the rock installations by the restaurant that's melded with glass with surprising form even for Japanese conception.
The rooms suffice to say are true to 4 Seasons style - spacious and luxuriously outfitted, the deluxe rooms here are some of the largest in Kyoto with views of the city or the ancient garden the property sits next to. The 20m indoor pool is doubtlessly set to impress, with open air jacuzzis and Ofuro spas and spacious lounge pavilions that all work very well to induce a relaxing ambience at an otherwise serious looking city hotel.
Lunch at Brasserie offers Japanese and continental flavours served with panache. While catching up with the lovely Maaya San whom I've met in snowy Hokkaido almost 10 years ago, we sampled some delectably creamy burrata with kaki and tomatoes and a Wagyu steak frites grilled to perfection.
